DIOCESE OF NUEVA SEGOVIA 

THE DIOCESE OF NUEVA SEGOVIA, WHICH WAS FOUNDED ON 14 AUGUST 1599 THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF BISHOP DOMINGO DE SALAZAR IN MADRID AND BY VIRTUE OF A BRIEF ISSUED BY POPE CLEMENT VII HAD ITS FIRST SEAT IN LAL-LOC, CAGAYAN. WHEN IT WAS TRANSFERRED TO VIGAN IT OCCUPIED A BUILDING, WHICH ESCAPED CAPTURE BY THE REBELS WHEN DIEGO SILANG, WHO HAD DEFEATED THE BISHOP’S FORCES WAS KILLED BY VICOS IN 1763. 

THE PRESENT BUILDING, WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1783-1790, ALSO HOUSED THE ECCLESIASTICAL COURT UNTIL 1890, WAS OCCUPIED BY THE REVOLUTIONISTS, WHO IMPRISONED BISHOP JOSE HEVIA CAMPOMANES IN IT, FROM 1896 until 1899; AND WAS USED AS A GARRISON BY THE AMERICAN FORCES UNDER LT. COL. JAMES PARK, 45TH INFANTRY, U.S.A.
