CHURCH OF CALAPAN

FOUNDED 1679 BY FR. DIEGO DE LA MADRE DE DIOS, AGUSTINIAN RECOLLECT. FORTIFIED WITH STONE WALL; TWO WATCHTOWERS AND TWENTY CANONS. ATTACKED BY MOROS, 23 OCTOBER 1754, WHO CAPTURED ANDRES DE JESUS Y MARIA AND MANY PEOPLE TAKING REFUGE THEREIN. BURNT, AUGUST, 1881. RECONSTRUCTED 1887. OCCUPIED BY THE REVOLUTIONISTS, 1898; BY THE AMERICANS, 1945; TURNED OVER TO THE FILIPINOS, 1945.
